2021 IPSA VIRTUAL WORLD CONGRESS - RECAP

 

The 2021 IPSA World Congress of Political Science was presented virtually for the first time in IPSA's 72 years history, from 10 to 15 July 2021. The 26th edition of IPSA’s flagship event attracted extraordinary attention from the academic community, with over 2,850 participants from 100 countries sharing their research on the theme of New Nationalisms in an Open World.

 

We are proud to announce that, despite the challenges from the pandemic and the transition to a virtual event, the Congress had the second-highest registration in IPSA's history after the 2012 World Congress in Madrid. Additionally, the delegates from the Global South made up 19 percent of the total participants. This is very promising news that aligns with IPSA's key missions to assist the development of the study of politics in the Global South.

 

The Congress saw a record number of papers, 2559 in total, integrated into over 600 panels, included three Plenary Sessions, 13 Special Sessions and 5 Award Sessions. The Congress program included general sessions around the major sub-literatures of Political Science and the Research Committee sessions brought together the specialist areas, staging 449 of all panels. The program co-chairs also contacted scholars working on different aspects of new nationalisms to create Congress Theme sessions. The Congress integrated the biannual conference of the Portuguese Political Science Association which held 52 panels in total, organized by the Local Organizing Committee.

 

A word of thanks goes to all World Congress participants and session chairs, as well as the Local Organizing Committee in Lisbon and the tireless volunteers from 28 countries worldwide who helped make the 2021 IPSA Virtual World Congress a great success.

 

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the partners and exhibitors who made this year’s event possible.

THE COUNCIL ELECTED IPSA'S NEW PRESIDENT AND PRESIDENT-ELECT

 

The IPSA Council, the highest decision-making body of the Association, has elected Dr. Dianne Pinderhughes (United States) as the new President of IPSA for a two-year term from 2021 to 2023. We are delighted that for the first time in our history, a woman President, Dr. Pinderhughes, succeedeed another, Prof. Dr. Marianne Kneuer. 

 

The IPSA Council has also elected Prof. Pablo Oñate (Spain) as the President-elect. Prof. Oñate will serve two years as President-elect and will become President at the 2023 IPSA World Congress in Buenos Aires.

 

On behalf of IPSA and the global Political Science community, we congratulate Dr. Pinderhughes and Prof. Oñate on their new positions.

 

 

 

 

 

ELECTION OF THE NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

 

We are pleased to announce the results of the election of the 26th Executive Committee. Congratulations to the 16 newly elected members.

 

For the first time, 56 percent of the Executive Committee members are women, 9 out of 16. With President, Past President and President-elect, the percentage of women leading IPSA is at 58 percent, 11 out of 19. These encouraging numbers are a clear indication that the general tendency of women being under-represented in the membership and senior levels of Political Science associations is changing.

 

A heartfelt thank you goes to all the candidates that have not been elected. IPSA would like to reiterate its commitment to you and the Political Science communities that you represent.

IPSA TRIENNIAL REPORT

2019-2021 RELEASED

 

We are happy to present the IPSA Triennial Report 2019-2021, focusing on the last three years of the Association’s main activities, including the World Congress, Summer Schools, publications, awards, inter-Congress events, external relations and IPSA’s other activities.

 

IPSA released three Biennial Reports from 2013 to 2018 at every Congress cycle. Due to the postponement of the 26th IPSA World Congress, this report covers three years instead of two.

 

Edited by Kim Fontaine-Skronski, with Mathieu St-Laurent acting as Managing Editor, the IPSA Triennial Report is now available in PDF format on the IPSA website.

IPSA'S ACADEMIC REPORT 2021 NOW AVAILABLE

 

IPSA is proud to present the IPSA Academic Freedom Report 2021. Written by IPSA's Past President Marianne Kneuer (2018-2021), the report presents the results and analysis of a survey on violations of Academic Freedom elaborated by the IPSA Committee on Academic Freedom and conducted by the IPSA Secretariat among its collective members in 2020. 44 national and regional Political Science association members of IPSA responded to the survey.

 

The report is available on the IPSA website for all IPSA members hoping that it can serve them as much as it can serve IPSA to get a better picture of the situation of Academic Freedom violations in their national community or other regions.

IPSA GUILLERMO O'DONNELL AWARD FOR LATIN AMERICAN SCHOLARS

 

IPSA is excited to announce the new Guillermo O’Donnell Award for Latin-American Scholars. The purpose of the award is to honour a Latin American scholar with residence in the region working on pioneering and innovative research in Political Science. The award targets early career scholars who have completed their Ph.D. within the last seven years, without any age limit. The award is named after Prof. Guillermo O’Donnell, IPSA's Past President and one of Latin America’s most prominent political scientists.

 

The recipient will present an award lecture at the 2023 IPSA World Congress in Buenos Aires.

TIMOFEY AGARIN ELECTED RC LIAISON REPRESENTATIVE

 

 

IPSA is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Timofey Agarin as Research Committee (RC) Liaison Representative. RC chairs elected Dr. Agarin at the Advisory Commission on Research (ACR) meeting held on 15 July 2021, in conjunction with the IPSA Virtual World Congress of Political Science.

 

The RC Liaison sits on the Committee on Research and Training (CRT), which convenes at each IPSA Executive Committee meeting. The position holder represents the interests of the research committees within IPSA official bodies and strengthens ties between research committees and the Executive Committee.

2ND IPSA-ANTALYA SUMMER METHOD SCHOOL

IPSA and Antalya Bilim University (ABU) will jointly present the second IPSA-ABU Summer School for Social Science Research Methods, which will be held virtually from 30 August to 10 September 2021.

 

The School offers advanced training for graduate students and academics intent on strengthening their methodological skills. The IPSA-ABU Summer School offers participants a terrific opportunity to expand their methodological knowledge, discuss research, and forge new collaborations.

6TH IPSA-FLACSO MEXICO SUMMER SCHOOL

Registration Deadline:

The 6th Annual IPSA-FLACSO Mexico Summer School on Concepts, Methods and Techniques in Political Science will be held virtually for the second time from 16 August to 10 September 2021.

 

Courses will be supplemented by two additional hours of computer lab sessions where specific software use will be acquired. The participants will have the opportunity to receive individualized advice on their specific needs related to their research interests. Furthermore, every afternoon our professors will impart lectures in which participants will discover how different methodologies are applied to answer research questions on specific and substantial issues.

NEW ISSUE OF IPSR PUBLISHED

 

The latest issue of the International Political Science Review (IPSR) for June 2021 has been published. IPSA members can access the full IPSR archive from 1980 to the present through their My IPSA menu.

 

Published by SAGE, IPSR is the journal of the International Political Science Association and is committed to publishing peer-reviewed material that makes a significant contribution to international political science.

 

 

FLAD POLITICAL SCIENCE AWARD

 

FLAD (Luso-American Development Foundation) awards two outstanding master’s dissertations on transatlantic relations or subjects relevant to them. The recipients will have the opportunity to join the most prominent experts in their field at the next IPSA World Congress in July 2023, taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They will also be offered round-trip flights to Buenos Aires and accommodation, along with two-year IPSA memberships.
