IPSA STATEMENT ON THE SITUATION IN UKRAINE

The International Political Science Association (IPSA) joins with our colleagues across the world in expressing deep concerns for the unjustified and illegal military incursion into Ukraine by the Putin regime. We are greatly alarmed by the grave humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, by the attacks on democracy and its core values such as human rights, the principle of sovereignty and peaceful cohabitation amongst the peoples of the world.

IPSA AND GENDER EQUALITY

UN's International Women's Day was celebrated last week under the theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”

We are proud that gender equality and diversity have become a leading criteria in the election of the IPSA President, Executive Committee and Council members, as well as for IPSA activities, thanks to various reforms made to IPSA’s constitution in recent years.

In the last three decades, IPSA has also witnessed an increase in female representation, with the election of five women presidents: Carole Pateman (1991-1994); Lourdes Sola (2006-2009); Helen V. Milner (2012-2014); Marianne Kneuer (2018-2021); and Dianne Pinderhughes (2021-2023). For the first time in our history, a woman President, Dianne Pinderhughes, succeeded another, Marianne Kneuer in 2021. The appointment of the first woman Executive Director marked another milestone in IPSA's history, with Kim Fontaine-Skronski taking over this key position after nine consecutive male Secretaries-General from 1949 to 2020.
