IPSA CELEBRATES ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY:

CHALLENGES AND NEW DIRECTIONS IN MULTI-LEVEL GOVERNANCE CONFERENCE

In 2024, IPSA will celebrate its 75th Anniversary and will hold two anniversary conferences, first in Montreal, where the IPSA Secretariat is located, from 25-26 April 2024, and second in Lisbon, from 11-13 September 2024.

IPSA will organize the first anniversary conference in collaboration with Concordia University and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) on the theme Challenges and New Directions in Multi-Level Governance. This two-day international conference will be held at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, and virtually from 25-26 April 2024.

IPSA has launched its new membership campaign for 2024! We invite you to renew your membership or join our global political science community for 2024. Your commitment allows IPSA to pursue its mission of supporting the development of political science worldwide, particularly in the Global South.

Last year, IPSA revised its individual membership fee structure to more accurately reflect the diverse financial realities of our global membership. This has proven to be a great success, with a record number of 4,435 individual members in 2023. Building on this success, and with the world facing rampant inflation, we are proud to announce that there will be no increase in membership fees for 2024.

IPSA PRESIDENT PABLO OÑATE AND PAST PRESIDENT DIANNE PINDERHUGHES PRESENT AT THE AAPS AND SAAPS CONFERENCES IN SOUTH AFRICA

IPSA President Pablo Oñate and Past President Dianne Pinderhughes were present in South Africa to participate in two international events. President Oñate participated in the 17th Biennial Conference and 50th Anniversary Celebration of the African Association of Political Science (AAPS), while Past President Pinderhughes attended the 16th Biennial Conference of the South African Association for Political Studies (SAAPS). Their involvement not only underscores IPSA's unwavering support for political science associations in Africa but also underlines its commitment to fostering partnerships and advancing political science within the African academic landscape.

EXPLORING DEMOCRATIC EROSION:

IPSA AT THE 11TH AMECIP CONGRESS

The 11th International Congress of the Mexican Political Science Association (AMECIP), to be held in Guadalajara from 24-27 October 2023, will feature a keynote address by IPSA Past President Marianne Kneuer. Her keynote address, Democratic Erosion: Interaction between National and International Dimensions, will explore the international implications of democratic erosion. The 2025 IPSA World Congress Program Co-Chair Azul A. Aguiar Aguilar will also lead a special roundtable with Alberto Olvera on Democratic Erosion and Civil Society, to address the growing concern about the erosion of democracy worldwide.

Participants in the 2023 IPSA World Congress can download their congress documents by 31 October 2023. The official congress website will be deactivated on 1 November 2023. You can access the following documents in electronic (PDF) format by logging into your online account and going to the "My Congress" user menu under "Registration": Registration invoice, registration receipt, participation letter, and certificate.

WC2023 SATISFACTION SURVEY: FIVE RESPONDENTS RECEIVE FREE REGISTRATIONS TO WC2025 IN SEOUL

We're pleased to announce the winners of five free registrations to the 2025 IPSA World Congress in Seoul! We held a draw from participants who completed the WC2023 Satisfaction Survey. To ensure transparency, we used the Random Sequence Generator website to conduct the drawing and shared the video on our social media accounts on 11 October.

IPSA-USP SUMMER SCHOOL IN CONCEPTS, METHODS AND TECHNIQUES IN POLITICAL SCIENCE, PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

DIGITAL THINKING: CONCEPT ANALYSIS IN THE WEB ENVIRONMENT

The 2024 edition of the IPSA-Federica Summer School - Digital Thinking: Concept Analysis in the Web Environment will be presented jointly in a hybrid format on the island of Capri, Italy, from 4-8 September 2024. The intended participants are enthusiastic young scholars with an undergraduate background in political science, and preference will be given to post-doctoral and doctoral students. The primary language of instruction at the IPSA Capri Summer School is English.

FOURTH EDITION OF THE IPSA-ABU SUMMER SCHOOL A SUCCESS

IPSA and Antalya Bilim University (ABU) successfully presented the 4th edition of the IPSA-ABU Summer School for Social Science Research Methods from 11-22 September 2023. The event was held in an online format and had a high international profile, with 21 participants joining from nine countries worldwide. This year, IPSA provided financial support to Syrian and Turkish students from earthquake-stricken regions of Turkey and Syria. Seven young academics were awarded scholarships.

1. One of the most critical elements for academics regarding the development of ChatGPT is related to copyright and the machine's training process. For the first time, two authors have taken legal action against OpenAI, the company that developed and owns the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT. They claim that OpenAI violated copyright laws by incorporating their books into the “training” data without obtaining permission from the authors. The complaint of the authors is based on the fact that the chatbot generated “very accurate summaries” of their novels, and they have included several sample summaries as exhibits in the lawsuit (Media Sources on the IPSAPortal).

2. As the debate about the reduced performance of Chat GPT4 and the need to regulate its applications continues to be ongoing, attention is growing on how the public perceives the use of artificial intelligence. A survey sponsored by the British government in late 2021 found a general willingness to allow the use of personal data for services, while in February 2023, the Pew Research Center found widespread confusion among the American public about relying on AI in personal health care. A recent article on attitudes toward AI applications, such as facial recognition technology, personalization algorithms, lethal autonomous weapons, and workplace automation, highlights the diversity of opinions on a geo and demographic level, as people living in East Asia appear to rely on AI, while women and those with lower socioeconomic status across regions have lower levels of trust (Thematic Networks on the IPSAPortal).

3. For the first time, academics have been granted access to Facebook and Instagram’s “black box of algorithms” to study the influence of social media on the 2020 US presidential campaign. Interviewed by the Times Higher Education, the researchers involved stated that the project showed the vast value of making such data available for research but warned that future industry collaborations should not be based on the “independence by permission” model. The first papers, produced by social scientists working with Meta researchers, have been published in Science and Nature, with more to follow. The results show significant segregation in political news exposure and demonstrate the influence of social media algorithms on what people see and on their level of engagement. However, there is no evidence that this influence leads to a change in political attitudes (Official records on the IPSAPortal).
