2014 Montreal IPSA World Congress of Political Science

End of Review Period

The review period is winding down and most closed panels and abstract submissions have now been reviewed. Notification emails will be sent the week of January 20 to 24. Please check your junk mail folders to make sure you receive the email. If you have not received a notification regarding your submission by Monday, January 27, please send an email to montreal2014@ipsa.org

Travel Grant Applications Under Review

The deadline to apply for a travel grant has passed. Close to 300 travel grant applications were received from all over the world. The applications will be reviewed by the Awards Committee and all applicants will receive an email notification concerning the status of their application by February 17, 2012. Please do not send individual inquiries prior to this date.

Early Bird Registration

Early bird registration for WC2014 is available until March 11. All participants, including session chairs, panel chairs, discussants and paper givers, must register to attend the congress.

As was the case at the 2012 World Congress of Political Science, anyone interested in attending the 2014 congress must first become a member of IPSA.

• Participants must be IPSA members to register.
• Early bird registration fees (valid until March 11) are as follows:
  • IPSA member: US$260 (+US$160 two-year IPSA membership fee)
  • IPSA student member: US$75 *Proof of student status required at the time of registration. (+$50 one-year IPSA student membership fee or $80 two-year IPSA student membership fee)
• All participants must be registered by March 11, 2014, to be included in the printed program.

The National University of Singapore’s Department of Political Science is proud to present its 3rd Annual IPSA-NUS Summer School for Social Science Research Methods, which runs from June 30 to July 11, 2014. The Methods School is organized in cooperation with the International Political Science Association. IPSA’s mission is to promote empirical research in political science and related disciplines around the world, and the IPSA-NUS Methods School forms the Asia-Pacific hub in a global network of methods programs, with other summer schools hosted at the University of São Paulo, the University of Stellenbosch and the Middle East Technical University.

The IPSA-NUS Methods School offers rigorous training with outstanding and highly experienced international faculty in a wide range of social science research methods. Students, post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty, civil servants, professionals and anyone with an interest in research methods can choose between 12 different quantitative, qualitative and formal methods courses as well as benefit from intensive, hands-on coursework over a two-week period.

In addition to regular class meetings, lab sessions and exercises, the Methods School organizes the IPSA-NUS International Speakers Series and offers various information sessions on such topics as academic writing and publishing. It fosters a unique and supportive social environment meant to facilitate networking and encourage the exchange of ideas on the theory and practice of social science research.

For 2014, a number of new, basic and advanced courses have been added to the existing Methods School curriculum. Overall, the Methods School offers 12 courses in quantitative, qualitative and formal methods. All courses are given by outstanding and highly experienced international faculty, with a focus on the theory and practice of social science research and high-quality training in diverse, state-of-the-art methods and techniques.

Join us for two weeks of rigorous training in social science research methods, and take advantage of truly global networking opportunities. In addition to acquiring cutting-edge quantitative, qualitative and formal methods skills, students have a chance to meet future collaborators and co-authors as well as make new friends with similar research interests from all over the Asia-Pacific, the U.S., Europe and beyond.

IPSA Welcomes the Mexican Political Science Association

IPSA is pleased to announce that the Asociacion Mexicana de Ciencia Politica (AMECIP) (Mexican Political Science Association) has joined the ranks of IPSA’s collective members.

The Committee on Participation and Memberships approved the Mexican PSA’s candidacy at the IPSA Executive Committee meetings held in Helsinki (Finland) on December 13 and 14, 2014. The AMECIP thus becomes the 52nd collective member of IPSA and will be a voting member at the upcoming IPSA Council, to be held during the next World Congress of Political Science in Montréal, Canada.

IPSA warmly welcomes the AMECIP and wishes political scientists in Mexico the best success.

Created in 1951, the INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL SCIENCE ABSTRACTS is among the most important sources of bibliographical information for researchers and students in political science and in related fields. Six issues annually provide about 8,000 abstracts of articles selected from among nearly 1,000 journals and yearbooks worldwide. Now in its 63th year, the print edition has been published by SAGE London since 2007. Editor Paul Godt and co-editor Serge Hurtig invite IPSA members to subscribe at the special price of US$94 (185$ for two-years) instead of 187$ (374$ for two-years) (contact membership@ipsa.org). What’s New on the IPSAPortal?

News from the IPSAPortal:

1) The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently leveraged its expertise in online education to launch its first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), titled Tackling the Challenges of Big Data. Geared to professionals, the course will be given by faculty at the university’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), which is part of the School of Engineering. It is the first course offered as part of the Online X programme, a new cycle of professional courses hosted by the edX platform (eLearnig on the IPSAPortal).

2) While American platforms continue to grow, even Europe has taken up the challenge of online education. Opting neither to adopt the overseas model nor create a multilingual model, France, instead, has devised a space intended to promote the francophonie, in keeping with the 2014 plan put forward by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). A total of 25 new open online courses given by various universities and research centres are now available on the France Université Numerique (FUN) website. On January 16, SciencesPo (Paris) launched a course on Espace Mondiale given by Bertrand Badie. (Courseware on the IPSAPortal)

3) The Oxford Internet Institute has brought its focus to bear on the issue of how research tackles the challenges posed by “big data.” The Special Issue of the OII Policy and Internet Blog is dedicated to analyzing the threats and opportunities related to the use of big data in human and social sciences. More specifically, the issue looks at how and to what extent electoral prediction and policy-making are influenced by the potentially unlimited size of data, and how researchers and policy-makers should best approach it. 4) With the international economic crisis still at the core of political agenda for many governments, the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion & Parties presents a special issue on “Financial Crisis, Austerity, and Electoral Politics,” with a focus on the Congressional Campaign and the related challenges pertaining to communications. Statement by IPSA on Nelson Mandela

The passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela on 5 December 2013 is a moment of historical importance not only for South Africans but also for the international community. The International Political Science Association (IPSA) expresses its sincere condolences to the Mandela family and the people of South Africa.

President Mandela was a statesman, politician and father figure for many also beyond South Africa. He was a symbol of hope that it is possible to create a more just society; that intractable issues or conflicts can be resolved; and that freedom for the human spirit is possible.

The importance of moral leadership characterized President Mandela. The values of freedom, equality, democracy, human dignity, public service and personal integrity, care for children and his rejection of injustices are associated with him. Instead of pragmatic interests, he demonstrated that moral principles can be part of any political dispensation.

President Mandela will be remembered not only for his leadership in the South African liberation struggle but also for the hope he gave for similar struggles in other parts of the world. His contribution to our understanding of transitions to democracy (especially of transitional justice) will long be valued. His involvement in resolving crises like Burundi, Libya and East Timor and his campaign to reform international governance in the UN also underscored his leadership at the international level.

President Mandela’s legacy will influence many of us. It encourages us into self-reflection and it challenges scholars of politics like us to consider how politics can improve the quality of humankind and be guided by the morality of well-being. IPSA salutes the life of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
