The Call for Papers for the 2020 World Congress is Opening on August 7 The Call for Papers for the 2020 IPSA World Congress of Political Science opens on August 7. We welcome paper proposals on any subject in Political Science, and look forward to featuring special sessions and events focused on the Congress theme “New Nationalisms in an Open World.” More than 300 open panels are awaiting your paper abstracts, and there is still time to submit closed-panel proposals. Closed Panel Submissions Paper Abstract Submissions Paper abstracts may be submitted to a session of interest, or to a specific open panel within that session. Gayatri Spivak and Liah Greenfeld Confirmed as Plenary Speakers for the 2020 IPSA World Congress IPSA is proud to announce that Professor Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, University Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University, and Professor Liah Greenfeld, University Professor and Professor of Sociology, Political Science, and Anthropology at Boston University, will serve as plenary speakers for the 26th IPSA World Congress of Political Science in Lisbon. In their plenary speeches, both speakers will focus on nationalism. Professor Spivak will deliver a plenary address titled Why Nationalisms in South and North Today?

Special Issue of Participation IPSA has published a special issue of Participation (Vol 42, July 2019) on the 2020 IPSA World Congress. The new issue provides detailed information about the Congress theme, plenary speakers, Congress program, Local Organizing Committee, Congress venue, and practical information for travelling to Lisbon. IPSA Celebrates its 70th Anniversary IPSA will celebrate its 70th anniversary in November at its founding location in Paris, in collaboration with the French Political Science Association. As part of the 70th-anniversary celebration, an academic conference will be held at Sorbonne University's Michelle Bachelet Jeria, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will deliver a keynote speech on 22 November 2019, followed by roundtable discussions. One of the roundtables will be titled “Political Science in Turbulent Times: 1949-2019,” while the other roundtable will focus on academic freedom. Call for IPSA President and President-Elect Call for IPSA President 2020-2022 and President-Elect are now open! In accordance with the recently modified procedures, IPSA will nominate a President-Elect, who will serve a two-year term under that title, before becoming President of IPSA for the 2022-2024 term. IPSA Secretariat Welcomes Two New Employees We are pleased to announce that two new employees have joined our team. Dârini Vedarattiname has been appointed to the position of Senior Director – Membership, Communication, and Strategy. She will be responsible for managing all aspects of external communications involving membership. She will also implement the internal and external messaging strategy of the association, providing communication and marketing support for the association’s programs. She will work closely with other teams to develop and coordinate web content, social media, media relations, and branding. Ignacio Delgado has been appointed to the position of Web Developer. He will work with our IT Project Manager, Eric Grève, to update and program the features of our websites to improve Membership services.
IPSA Summer Schools 11th IPSA-USP Summer School in São Paulo Receiving Applications for the 2020 Session The 11th Annual IPSA-USP Summer School in Concepts, Methods, and Techniques in Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations will be held at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, from January 6 to 31, 2020. The Summer School is organized as an intensive four-week program. The first week consists of a core foundational block to ensure participants gain fundamental skills that are essential to methodological training. The next three sessions consist of one-week courses organized along methodological tracks. The core foundational block will take place from January 6 to 10, 2020. What's New on the IPSAPortal? 1. Have you ever asked yourself “What’s the best fact-checker in the world?” Well take a look at the finalists for the Global Fact 6 Awards, announced at the annual summit of The International Fact-Checking Network, a unit of the Poynter Institute dedicated to bringing together fact-checkers worldwide. The awards recognize twelve websites in three categories. Winners for the Most Bizarre fact-check are Colombiacheck(Colombia), Corrective (Germany), DELFI (Lithuania) and Rappler Inc.(Philippines). Recognized for Most Creative Format are BBC Africa Eye(UK), France 24 Observer (France), Pagella Politica (Italy) and Fatabyyano.net (Jordan). The sites recognized for Best Correction were Africa Check (South Africa), TEMPO (Indonesia), Kakatabaari EDU (Finland) and FactCeck.org (United States). How does the increase in internet use compare across different regions? Where is there still room for market expansion? Both Europe and North America have high market penetration rates at 86.8% and 89.4% respectively. Although countries in these two regions have seen a significant 200% growth in internet use since the year 2000, this is nothing compared to the massive 10,000% increase seen in Africa or 5,000% increase in the Middle East. The comparison of the penetration rates is revealing; while North America and Europe see a consolidated diffusion (71.8% and 41.1% respectively), in Asia the penetration rate of 19.3% shows the huge potential for future growth. The multi-faceted political, legal and economic implications of Brexit are pushing the research community to provide more highly structured analyses of developments. Dublin City University, for example, has set up a Brexit Institute, a hub for academic and policy perspectives. The Brexit Institute’s website reports events and seminars (e.g. “Brexit and the Future of Europe”), alongside scholarly articles like the 2nd Brexit Report, as well as blog posts. The Elsevier community also provides free access to data, metrics, reports, and other resources to help members of the global research community monitor any effects of Brexit on funding, citizens’ rights, data regulation, and more.
