Fourth Summer School on Social Science Research Methods (Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2013)

The African Doctoral Academy is pleased to offer its fourth Summer School on Social Science Research Methods in partnership with the International Political Science Association (IPSA).

The Summer School is geared to prospective and current doctoral students in the social sciences and humanities, though anyone with a master’s degree may register.

Courses will be offered full-time (Mon-Fri), in English, from January 14 to 25, 2013. The Wilcocks Building on Ryneveld Street in Stellenbosch will serve as the registration venue. From there, students will be directed to the respective presentation venues.

The following courses will be offered:

WEEK 1 – January 14 (Monday) to 18 (Friday)

- Course 1: Research Designs in the Social Sciences (Johann Mouton - Stellenbosch University)

- Course 2: Introduction to SPSS (Cindy Lee Steenekamp & Nelius Boshoff - Stellenbosch University)

- Course 3: Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis with ATLAS.ti (Lauren Wildschut - Stellenbosch University)

- Course 4: Introduction to Survey Methods and Sampling (Jan Vorster - Stellenbosch University)

- Course 5: Comparative Research Designs and Comparative Methods - An Overview (Dirk Berg-Schlosser - Philipps University Marburg)

- Course 6 (to be confirmed): Introduction to Multivariate Statistics (Bernhard Kittel - University of Vienna)

- Course 7: No Real Gap: Epistemological Foundations of Qualitative and Quantitative Research (Werner Patzelt - Technical University Dresden)

- Course 8: Designing, Doing and Publishing Case Studies (Michael Gibbert - University of Lugano)

WEEK 2 – January 21 (Monday) to 25 (Friday)

- Course 9: Evaluation Research (Johann Mouton and Lauren Wildschut - Stellenbosch University)

- Course 10: Basic Statistics and Data Analysis Using SPSS (Cindy Lee Steenekamp and Nelius Boshoff - Stellenbosch University). Course 2 is a PRE-REQUISITE for attending this course.

- Course 11: Advanced Qualitative Data Analysis with ATLAS.ti (Susanne Friese - QUARC). Course 3 is a PRE-REQUISITE for attending this course.

- Course 12: Interview Techniques and Analyses

What’s new on the IPSAPortal?

News from the IPSAPortal:

1) A UN Declaration (dated September 24) recognizes the essential role of parliaments in upholding the rule of law, welcoming inter-action between parliaments, and supporting the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the UN. New resources on the subject are now available through n the IPU website. They include Rule of Law – A Guide for Politicians, a publication geared to MPs, recent data on national parliaments, and a new archive of average world and regional rates of participation in national parliaments among women. 2) The Centre de Recherces politiques (Cevipof), part of the Paris-based Political Studies Institute (Sciences-po), presented a focus on the 2012 presidential elections. The website features a wide range of research materials, including an analysis of the French electorate as well as results from and analysis of the most recent voter scrutiny. 3) Journalism.org, the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, follows the 2012 US presidential campaign through coverage by leading American newspapers. Analysis and comments on a broad range of topics – e.g., the relevance of the Web, the role of social media, review and impact of the first presidential debate - are available on the homepage. 4) The 2010 general election is the focus of the September 2012 issue of American Politics Research. This special issue features contributions on party influence, the role of districts and national opinion, the roll-call vote, consequences of party switching, and the impact of the Obama-led health care reform on the elections. New IPSAPortal Ebook

Some six years after the paperbound edition was distributed at the 2006 congress in Fukuoka, the IPSAPortal is now available in ebook format: this is a fresh opportunity to comfortably browse through the extraordinary wealth and variety of scholarly sources. The ebook includes a new videolectures section. It can be downloaded free of charge from the IPSAPortal website in PDF and eBook format.
