Jus post bellum is a framework that offers a new way of conceiving of the existing laws, norms and principles that apply during the transition from conflict to peace. As a point of departure for discussing a post-conflict legal framework, jus post bellum offers us theoretical, normative, and practical concepts for dealing with post-conflict challenges. In particular, jus post bellum can act as an interpretive framework to improve the fairness and sustainability of the transition from conflict to peace. A study of specific challenges that arise in various peacebuilding practice areas--such as fragmentation, prioritization, and human rights protections--reveals a number of overlapping interpretive principles that fall within the jus post bellum framework. Interpreting existing substantive norms according to jus post bellum principles of publicness, qualified deference, and proportionality, peacebuilders can mitigate against the risks posed by conflicting normative frameworks and policy priorities. Moreover, by relying on principles of democratic inclusion, justice, contextualism, gender equality, and sustainability, peacebuilders can move beyond a return to the status quo ante and instead foster a more resilient society and sustainable peace.
