This paper introduces the concept of "geocultural identities" that we propose within a sociocultural semiotic framework to make sense of place-based collective identities. Besides some theoretical considerations on the concept, we propose a semiotic square relating four types of geocultural identities: national, supranational, subnational and transnational. We illustrate the theoretical argument with concrete examples.
