Discover the Museums and Culture of Montréal

Montreal’s museums are dynamic institutions that continue to shape the city’s cultural identity and broaden access to a cumulative collection of over four million objects. These items not only recount local history, but also that of humanity as a whole, and are made available to a wide audience every year in over two hundred exhibitions. Through this carefully conserved material evidence of archaeological, artistic, architectural, scientific, and historic heritage, Montréal’s museums, galleries, and other cultural spaces offer the privilege of participating, via traditional and new media, in compelling, informative, and educative dialogues between the present and the past.

  • What’s New on the IPSAPortal?

News from the IPSAPortal:

1) The issue of distance learning has become a hot topic among members of most major academic associations, including those in political science. The American Political Science Association’s recent annual Conference on Learning and Teaching held in Philadelphia from February 7 to 9 featured a session on Distance Learning. The papers presented will be soon available on the website, and papers from previous editions are already posted. (Associations on the IPSAPortal).

2) A few days before the inauguration of the Olympic Games in Sochi, the Pew Research Center published the results of a study highlighting widely held public perceptions of the decision to hold the Olympic Games in Russia. American public opinion suggests skepticism (44% of respondents said it was a poor decision) motivated by concerns over security more so than negative perceptions of the Putin government. The survey analysis and data are available on the Pew website. (Thematic Networks on the IPSAPortal)

3) The democratic crisis in Turkey is the focus of a recent report posted on the FreedomHouse website. The report cites restrictions on online freedom of expression recently introduced by the Turkish Parliament as a representative indicator of the situation unfolding in that country. Along with the report, the website features a press release, an interactive timeline related to Turkish media, and previous reports on freedom of the press and freedom on the Internet. (Thematic Networks on the IPSAPortal)

4) The ACE project recently published all the papers presented at the 2013 Global Elections Organization (GEO) Conference held in Seoul from October 15 to 17, 2013. The event was hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea (NEC). All the presentations may be downloaded from the website in Word and/or PDF format, and in many cases the PowerPoint presentations are also available for download at no charge. IPSA-NUS 3rd Summer School for Social Science Research Methods 2014

June 30, 2014 - July 11, 2014

National University of Singapore. Singapore

The National University of Singapore’s Department of Political Science is proud to present its 3rd Annual IPSA-NUS Summer School for Social Science Research Methods, which runs from June 30 to July 11, 2014. The Methods School is organized in cooperation with the International Political Science Association. IPSA’s mission is to promote empirical research in political science and related disciplines around the world, and the IPSA-NUS Methods School forms the Asia-Pacific hub in a global network of methods programs, with other summer schools hosted at the University of São Paulo, the University of Stellenbosch and the Middle East Technical University.

The IPSA-NUS Methods School offers rigorous training with outstanding and highly experienced international faculty in a wide range of social science research methods. Students, post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty, civil servants, professionals and anyone with an interest in research methods can choose between 12 different quantitative, qualitative and formal methods courses as well as benefit from intensive, hands-on coursework over a two-week period.

In addition to regular class meetings, lab sessions and exercises, the Methods School organizes the IPSA-NUS International Speakers Series and offers various information sessions on such topics as academic writing and publishing. It fosters a unique and supportive social environment meant to facilitate networking and encourage the exchange of ideas on the theory and practice of social science research.

For 2014, a number of new, basic and advanced courses have been added to the existing Methods School curriculum. Overall, the Methods School offers 12 courses in quantitative, qualitative and formal methods. All courses are given by outstanding and highly experienced international faculty, with a focus on the theory and practice of social science research and high-quality training in diverse, state-of-the-art methods and techniques.

Join us for two weeks of rigorous training in social science research methods, and take advantage of truly global networking opportunities. In addition to acquiring cutting-edge quantitative, qualitative and formal methods skills, students have a chance to meet future collaborators and co-authors as well as make new friends with similar research interests from all over the Asia-Pacific, the U.S., Europe and beyond.

As the Methods School is a non-profit venture, course fees have been priced accordingly and represent excellent value compared to similar events in the U.S. and Europe (compare!) while offering the same quality of instruction.

  • International Encyclopedia of Political Science - Special Discount of 20% to All IPSA Members

Dear IPSA member,

as you are certainly aware IPSA has been responsible for the edition of the widely acclaimed International Encyclopedia of Political Science (see text below). This is a truly global and pluralist enterprise with contributors from all over the world. SAGE is now offering a special discount of 20% to all IPSA members. This is particularly important for the electronic version, since each member of an institution which has subscribed to the encyclopedia can freely download and print individual articles. This will ensure a really wide distribution which is the main aim of this enterprise.

So, please inform your university or other library to do so and you and your colleagues and students can enjoy this free access!

On behalf of the editors, Bertrand Badie, Dirk Berg-Schlosser, Leonardo Morlino

__________________________

Developed in partnership with the International Political Science Association with entries from leading international scholars from around the world, the International Encyclopedia of Political Science provides a definitive, comprehensive picture of all aspects of political life, recognizing its theoretical foundations and including empirical findings from across the globe. This eight volume set examines all the main subdisciplines of political science and includes coverage of comparative politics, epistemology, political economy, political sociology, and international relations.

The process of democratization will remain a vital topic during the 21st century, and the encyclopedia contains extensive coverage of the evolution of democracy as well as other political systems. Readers will also find both theoretical and empirical background on other important issues such as global security, the relationship between religion and the state, and political issues related to gender and race/ethnicity.

Six issues annually provide about 8,000 abstracts of articles selected from among nearly 1,000 journals and yearbooks worldwide. Now in its 63th year, the print edition has been published by SAGE London since 2007. Editor Paul Godt and co-editor Serge Hurtig invite IPSA members to subscribe at the special price of US$94 (185$ for two-years) instead of 187$ (374$ for two-years) (contact membership@ipsa.org). • Passing of Professor Howard H. Lentner

It is with regret that IPSA announces the passing of Professor Howard H. Lentner on February 5, 2014, at age 82. Professor Lentner held various academic leadership positions, at Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), McMaster University (Ontario), Baruch College and the CUNY Graduate School. He was previously involved with IPSA RC36 Political Power, hosting one of their meetings in New York City in 2004, and he also helped to co-edit two books (Power in Contemporary Politics, Sage 2000; Hegemony and Power, Lexington Books 2006). His intellectual honesty and personal warmth will be greatly missed.
