Spain has long been characterized by a consensus-driven parliamentary culture, where parties have tended to support legislative proposals. While previous research links parliamentary conflict to factors such as variations in the type of government, bill sponsorship, ideological salience, or economic context, recent scholarship highlights that party‑system change can disrupt established legislative dynamics. Building on this perspective, this paper explores whether the presence of VOX has transformed patterns of voting behavior in the Spanish parliament. We assess whether its presence has intensified parliamentary conflict, whether its confrontational strategy is generalized or concentrated on issues the party “owns”, and how VOX collaborates with other groups, identifying potential partners and the conditions under which cooperation occurs. We also compare VOX’s impact with that caused by opposition parties’ adaptation to competition from other parties such as Podemos and Ciudadanos, assessing whether the far right represents a substantially different shift. Empirically, the study is based on the analysis of the parliamentary votes on all decree laws and organic laws passed in the Spanish Parliament between 2000 and 2025 to compare pre- and post-VOX patterns.
