This article explores the opinions of the main trade unions and employers’ associations in Portugal and in Spain regarding the European Directive on Adequate Minimum Wages. This directive is part of an ambitious strategy by the current European Commission to establish a European level of collective bargaining within the European Pillar of Social Rights. Based on interviews and a review of relevant documents, this article reveals widespread skepticism among social partners in both countries regarding the supposed benefits of Europeanizing labor policy. Domestic interests and considerations continue to play a significant role in this matter.
